When we are invited to come and do a consultation about a renovation with people, often they will ask us what we would do if it was our house. They usually want help with the design. Ultimately, it doesn’t really matter what we would do if it was our house because our house is not their house.

However, we have often guided or consulted with people to find the right choices for their own houses. Some of that comes down to what the era of the house is, what kind of identity they need, and what will be the function of the area. We have done a lot of kitchens over the years. We have people come to our own kitchen, which we now call our show kitchen, to show them some of the work that we do and what we have done with our own space.

We have some cherry cabinetry that we put up for ourselves. We also have a display cabinet with leaded glass and some lights to accent what is inside and also below this cabinet. The leaded glass design was something that we have used throughout the house. It matches some of windows that are in the front of our living room area. We also mimicked the same design and put that in some back windows that face our deck.

Add Cohesiveness by carrying design elements to different areas of your house.

A way to bring some cohesiveness to your house is to do carry a design element to different parts of your home. It is small little things like this in your kitchen that really help to add some architectural detail and some interest so you are not only looking at this big wall of cabinetry. Ultimately, what people choose for the kitchens and in their own spaces comes down to personal choice. Over the years, we have developed the ability to work with people to help them choose those things. We have become a design build firm.

We can do whatever our client’s wishes are and we can help them find the products that would suit what their odverall design vision is. From there, we can go into helping them chose some backsplash tile or bathroom tile if we are working in the bathroom.

We can be a strong resource for people to help them with their design, their layout in the kitchen, to help choose new products, and then execute the job. I wanted to share my dream kitchen. We chose the cherry. We have lovely tiles in the background.

Chose something to splurge on for yourself based on your needs

I chose the faucet I have specifically because I wanted a faucet that didn’t have taps I had to turn on and off. I often cook from scratch. My hands are always covered with chicken and all that kind of stuff. The faucet I chose is really cool because I can just touch it.  You don’t have to even turn it off or anything. That was one splurge item for me.

Be creative with small touches that can show your personality

The other thing I love about this kitchen is the James Bond feature. I have been a huge fan of James Bond ever since I was a little girl. We built in this downdraft that comes up when I press a button. Then, it goes down when I’m not cooking or don’t need it. It is amazing. It is James Bond all the way. If I can’t have a car that shoots stuff out I will gladly take a downdraft in my kitchen.

It is really the special touches that make a house a home. I have these really cool handles. They are from a Lincoln Nash. That’s a car from the 50s.

We basically changed a hood ornament into a handle for our fridge and our freezer.

There are some small ways that you can be creative and put some personality into your space to make it your own.

We did that. We love it when people come to us with really cool ideas. We are super happy to get on that bandwagon and help figure out the ways that we can personalize the space and make your house feel more like a home for you. It doesn’t really matter what is in our house.

The most important thing is for you to feel at home

What matters is what you want in your house. What I would prefer and what is in mine is not necessarily what you prefer in yours. What makes my house feel like home to me is not necessarily what is going to make your house feel like home for you.

If you are interested in examining ways you can be creative in your home and you are thinking about doing a renovation, I would love to chat with you about it. I just want you to know that there are many small ways and small things you can do to make your house feel more like home. A renovation can always bring some change, but I also encourage you to think outside the box.

The most important thing at the end of the day is to be comfortable
